The City of Wilmington is found in New Castle County, Delaware. The city had a population totaling 199,827 as of July 2016. It is the county seat of New Castle County.
Wilmington covers approximately 19 square miles (50km2). It is bordered by Newark Bay to the north; Brandywine Creek to the south; Christina Lake to the west; and Claymont to the east.
Wilmington is part of the Philadelphia-Camden-Delaware Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The University of Delaware is located in Wilmington, Delaware. It is one of three state universities within Delaware. The university enrolls about 16,000 students each semester and is known for its academic excellence and athletic programs.
Wilmington is also home of the International Center of Photography, which was founded in 1936, as well as the National Museum of American Art that was founded in 1960.
Stephen King was born in Wilmington. He spent his early childhood living in the town of Leeds, Maine, just outside of Portland.
Wilmington is served by Wilmington/Newark Airport, which serves commercial flights. Amtrak trains arrive here every day.
